A New Program to Reach Younger Donors

Written by TrueSense Marketing | Dec 7, 2017 5:00:00 AM

As the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers get older and older, those with direct experiences and memories of being helped by The Salvation Army are increasingly passing away.  The symbol of the shield is not as self-explanatory as it once was.

If you’ve spent time wondering how to engage the next generation of Salvation Army donors and volunteers, you’re not alone.  In 2011, the Dallas/Fort Worth Area Command birthed an idea to reach the next generation of Salvation Army supporters, called Echelon, now 500 members strong.

The purpose of Echelon is clear:

Echelon is The Salvation Army’s strategy to reach millennial donors, advocates, and volunteers.  This effort aims to create a space where The Salvation Army can share ideas with people outside of the organization and church structure, as well as outside the typical volunteer and donor base.  To create a space that will have an impact and influence on how The Salvation Army serves people who are suffering.  And to grow a dedicated group of volunteers that will become the next generation of Salvation Army supporters.

Echelon is available for any local Salvation Army to adopt — however, it’s incredibly helpful to have a dynamic and active advisory board in place before starting a local chapter.  Advisory board members can shepherd and mentor those who are leading this charge.

Curious what makes a strong Echelon member?

An 18- to 35-year-old who is active in their community, passionate about The Salvation Army, and willing to spend their time celebrating and serving The Army’s mission!

Knowing that this particular demographic is likely in the throes of student loans, building a career, and growing a family, there is minimal financial obligation — annual membership dues are less than $100.

More than 15 locations around the country have already started a local chapter — from Greenville, SC, to Sacramento, CA.

2019 Echelon Update

We’re thrilled to report that there are currently 24 active chapters around the country with an additional 10 in active development at this time.

Echelon is a great program to engage younger audiences with The Salvation Army. If you’re interested in starting a local Echelon chapter, please reach out to Katie Seifu, National Echelon Manager.
